Topic 2 - Probability Flashcards
What is an experiment?
An experiment is a repeatable process that gives rise a number of outcome
What is a sample space?
Is the set of all possible outcomes
What is an event?
Is a set of one or more of these outcomes
What is probability ?
Probability is the number of outcomes in the
event divided by the number of outcomes in
the sample space (𝑺)
What should you remember about probability?
Probability cannot be NEGATIVE
Probability is always between 0 and 1
(OR 0 and 100: as a percentage)
What are mutually exclusive events?
If two events are mutually exclusive they can’t happen at the same time.
What are dependent events
Dependent events: the occurrence of one event
affects the other.
What are independent events?
Independent events: the occurrence of one does
not affect the other.
How do we list items when dealing with a Venn diagram
When we list items within a set, we use curly brackets { } and separate each item in the list with commas
What is a complement , ‘ , ?
The items are not in a set
what is a empty set, ∅ ?
Contains no items
ξ what does this symbol represent
The universal set would therefore contain every item within all of the regions in the Venn diagram.
What does A’ or B’ represent?
Items that are NOT in set A or B’ (depends on the question )
What does A ∩ B represent ?
The items that are in set A and set B are called the intersection of the Venn diagrams
What does (A ∩ B)’ represent ?
This set contains all of the items that are not in the intersection of A and B.
What does A ∪ B represent?
The items that are in set A or set B are called the union of A or B.
What does (A ∪ B)’ represent?
The items that are not in set A or set B
