Popular cause
Normally proposed by people who opposed government and corruption (and monarchy)

How did King George III effect patriotism?
- Created the cult of monarchy
- Reigned for 60 years
- First of the Hanoverians who was brought. Up in Britain - different from the Germans kings who were detested in England
- was removed mainly from politics and therefore suffered no negativity from this
- Stood up the US and people liked this
Women and Patriotism
Turned against the French Revolution when Marie Antoinette was killed
Active in the war effort (clothes and money)

Expansion of Militia volunteers
1804 there were 450,000 volunteers
Working classes had to be involved because the middle/upper classes couldn’t handle the threat on their own
Volunteer (working classes) were emboldened by travelling around the country
The Irish and Patriotism
Irish manpower was a big part of the empire
By 1830, 45% of British forces were Irish
Wellingtons government repealed the anti catholic laws in 1829 - this boosted patriotism even further
