Topic 2 - Electricity Flashcards
What is a conductor?
A material that allows the flow of electricity through it.
E.g. metals
What is an insulator?
A material which don’t allow the flow of electricity through them because they don’t have free electrons.
E.g. plastic
What allows metals to conduct electricity?
The delocalised electrons which are free to flow through the metal and carry a current
Why do cables have plastic coatings?
It’s used as an insulator to prevent electricity from flowing into you if you touched the wire.
What is needed for an electric current to work?
- source of energy
- a component
- a complete loop
- no short circuits
What is an electric circuit?
A path for an electric charge to flow along.
What is the difference between a series circuit and a parallel circuit?
A series circuit
