What is the need for the welfare state?
To help personal, financial and social problems.
To sustain personal finances.
What are the two types of benefits.
- Contributory
- non-contributory
What is job seekers allowance? Give some factors
A benefit from those who are not in full time work but who are able to work claimants earn the same
- higher rate for over 25’s
- have to be aged between 18 and retirement age.
I that is statutory sick pay? Give factors.
If employed your employer has to pay you ssp if your off for 4 or more days
- payed for a max of 28 weeks although employees can pay more.
- aren’t eligible if unemployed or self employees.
What is employment and support allowance? Give factors
If you have had the maximum 28 weeks of statutory sick pay or are self employed, you may be eligible to claim ESA in the event that illness or disability prevents you from working.
- paid at a standard weekly benefit for the first 13 weeks
- will not be paid at all if savings are more than £16,000
What is disability and career benefits(PIP)? Give factors
Payable to those aged between 16 and 64 who have a long term illness or disability that means they are unable to perform basic daily living activities or have limited mobility.
What is a housing benefit? Give factors
Single people under the age of 35 will be Able to claim housing benefit if they live in a bed it or a single room within a house or flat shared by others. Housing benefits will often cover the full monthly rent but can be reduced if income is above a certain threshold or paying unreasonable rent to a private landlord.
What is support for mortgage interest? Give factors
This will only cover interest on a mortgage and not any capital repayments.
Additional benefits?
Those who are eligible for job seekers,employment and support allowance may also be eligible for additional benefits such as discounts on tax
What is income support?
For people who work less than 16 hours per week because they are pregnant,full time career of because they are a single parent with a child under 5 and isn’t eligible for jib seekers
What is a state pension.
Paid to everyone who has reached state pension age. The basic rate increases in line with inflation
What is statutory maternity/paternity pay?
If a women is employed and eligible fathers are entitled to statutory paternity pay for only one or two weeks unless the Mother decides to go back early I’m which case the father can use up the unused maternity leave
What is child benefits ?
Flat cash benefit to all families or single parents with dependent children. Everyone receives the same amount there is additional tax charge that anyone earning over £50,000 will have to pay if they chose to receive child benefits
What is the money advice service ?
It is a free advice service that offers information on various different topics including budgeting and benefits
What is citizens advice ?
Government funded national debt and advice charity, they help people with any money problems that they face. They offer information advice and interactive. Tools.
