Topic 2: Computer Organization Flashcards
1
Q
Register
A
A very small, fast blocks of memory writhing the CPU
2
Q
CPU’s parts
A
- CU: controls the ALU and directs the operations of the processor
- ALU: executes simple arithmetic operations (ADD, SUBTRACT, NOT)
3
Q
CU
A
- control unit
- communicates between CPU and memory
- contains IR and PC
4
Q
ALU
A
- arithmetic logic unit
- contains registers to store temporary data
- inputs quantities that relate to the word size of the computer
5
Q
Computer bus
A
Connects all the internal components of a computer to the motherboard
6
Q
Address bus
A
- computer bus that connects to the CPU and the main memory, which is used to locate the address in memory
- address bus carries the memory address between the CPU and RAM
- RAM returns the address through the data bus
7
Q
Data bus
A
- computer bus that transfers data from one component on the motherboard to another component
8
Q
MAR
A
- memory address register
- a CPU register that stores a memory address that will be fetched to the CPU or that will send the data to be stored
- MAR is how the CPU communicates with the RAM
- connected with the address bus
9
Q
CPU
A
- computer processing unit
- performs all the operations required for the system
10
Q
MDR
A
- memory data register
- a register that is used to hold information that is in the process of being transferred from the memory to the CPU and viceversa
- connected to the data bus
- MDR can load its data from the data bus/one of the CPU registers
11
Q
RAM
A
- random access memory
- a hardware device that allows data to be stored only when the power is turned on = volatile
- stores instructions and data (input/result from an operation)
12
Q
Primary memory
A
Computer memory that is accessed directly by the CPU
Usually refers to RAM
