topic 2: bonding, structure and properties of matter Flashcards
what are ions?
charged particles
what are elements with a full outer shell of electrons called?
noble gases
when atoms lose electrons what ion do they form?
positive
what is an ionic bond?
when oppositely charges ions are strongly attracted to one another by electrostatic forces
what elements are most likely to form ions?
group 1,2,6&7
what ions do group 1 and 2 elements form?
group 1 form +1 and group 2 form +2
what ions do group 6 and 7 elements form?
group 6 form -2 and group 7 form -2
what do elements in a group all have in common?
all have the same no. of electrons in their outer shell
what is an ionic compound?
a compound that only contains ionic bonds
what is a giant ionic lattice?
when ions are closely packed with electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions in all directions
what are the features of ionic compounds?
high melting and boiling points due to the strong bonds
are ionic compounds able to conduct electricty?
yes, when in molten form and also when they are dissolved in water as the ions are free to move
