Topic 2 Biology Flashcards
How we prevent pathogens and microbes entering body
Muscles and cilia
Hair focciles glands in skin producing antiseptic oils
Acid in stomach
Antiseptic fluid in tears
How phagocytes work 4 steps
Phagocytes identify pathogens and attach to it
Cyptoplasm then engulfs it
Pathogen is killed and digested
Indigestible residue is removed
When would aseptic technique be used
Surgery
Injection
Stictching wounds
What are lymphocytes
White blood cells that produce antibodies
Ways to prevent contamination in aseptic techniques
Disinfect table
Bunsen burner on beside work place to kill airborne particles
Flame neck of agar bottle
Incubate at 25°c and upside down
How lymphocytes work
If infected with pathogens the lymphocyte detects it and produces antibodies which are complementary to pathogens this causes pathogen to clump together which then are engulfed by phagocytes
What are lymphocytes
A type of white blood cell found in blood
How do vaccines work
Inject dead or inactive pathogens which makes lymphocytes produce antibodies against them so if it occurs again antibodies kill it
What does antibiotics only work on
Bacteria
Name a type of antibiotic
Penicillin
What’s a clear zone
An area on Petri dish where antibiotic has cleared bacteria
How was penicillin found and who by
Found by Alexander Fleming when mould came through his window landed on Petri dish and killed bacteria
