Q

Explain why HDI is considered a composite indicator of development

A

It has more than one factor that is used to order the number of countries in order of all the factors for example if they have good numbers of all of the factors then they will be lower on the scale however if they have poor factors then they will be high meaning that they are emerging or developing

Q

Explain why solely using GDP might give an inaccurate view of development

GDP is gross domestic products is the total value of all the goods which is not a good view as a company could be raising it by a lot where as the rest of the country is doing horribly

A

This has more connections to other places which creates inequalities because trade will be cheaper and you can trade to other countries as well meaning development is easier and maybe quicker

17
Q

Explain how economic and political factors (TNCs, neo-colonialism, governance, trade) have caused global inequalities

A

This restricts methods of trading and ease of trading meaning that trade will be harder and more money will be needed to be spent meaning that money will be lost meaning that it will be harder for the country to develop

18
Q

Assess the significance of economic and political factors in affecting how a developed a country is

A

The economy should be good with less corruption. The economy if the country means that money is being spent well and if not the country is jot as developed. The corruption rate should be low as voting should be open to all the people and the voting should be counted fairly. Other factors may be important but not as much of the economy and corruption

19
Q

How do global inequalities in development affect peoples’ lives in developing countries

A

The core and developed countires may take advantage of developing and periphery countries by buying materials for less money meaning that the developing countries will have less money to invest into the countries development

20
Q

List the stages of Rostow’s modernisation theory

A
Traditional society
Preconditions for take off
Take off
Drive to maturity
High mass consumption
21
Q

Explain changes in economy that occur at the take off stage

A

22
Q

Explain how demographic factors have prevented development in Malawi

A

Infant mortality means that the children will not be as likely to live to the age of one year old meaning that jobs will not be take by those kids when they grow up meaning that taxes will not be paid to the government meaning that less money will be invested into the country
Dependancy ratio is how many elderly and young people work compared to all the people working and normal working age. The lower this number is the better but Malawi has a high number as money is needed by everyone so the young and elderly have to work

23
Q

Explain one way which topography affects economic development

A

Steep land is a problem especially for countries in traditional society as they need land to grow food on and as steep land has very little soil less things can be grown and this means that less can be sold also steep hills are prone to have land slides meaning that crops that they are growing to sell will be gone meaning that they will have to restart as their source of money will have to be reset

24
Q

Franks theory

A

More manufactured goods are being given to the periphery as imports also the exports are worth less compared to the imports meaning that they sre losing money

25
Q

Explain take off

A

Growth is rapid and investments and technology creates new manufacturing industries. Take off requires investments from profits earned from over seas trade. The economy will be affected positively as more money take off requires that they are exporting more than they are importing
