TOPIC 1A Flashcards
Are components that make up the framework or skeleton of a structure. They are designed to support loads, resist forces, and ensure the stability and integrity of the structure.
Structural Members
Horizontal members that carry loads perpendicular to their length. They
support forces such as bending moments and shear.
Beams
Vertical members that primarily support compressive loads. They transfer the weight of the structure to the foundation
Columns
Flat, horizontal members, typically made of concrete, that distribute loads over a large area. Slabs are commonly used in floors and ceilings.
Slabs
Structural elements at the base of columns or walls that distribute loads to the soil and provide a stable foundation.
