Topic 1.4 - Density Flashcards
1
Q
When do objects float in water?
A
When the object is less dense than the water displaced by it.
2
Q
State the eqaution for density. Gvie appropriate units.
A
3
Q
Describe a method to determine the density of a regular solid
A
- Take measurements of relevant dimensions using a ruler
- Calculate the volume using an appropriate equation
- Measure mass using a balance and calculate density using density = mass/volume
4
Q
Descirbe a method to determine the density of an irregular solid
A
- Measure volume by submersion: read the volue of liquid, submerge the solid, then read the change in volume (which would equal volume of object)
- Measure mass using a balance
- Use density = mass/volume to calculate density
5
Q
Descrieb a method to determine the density of a liquid
A
- Place an empty beaker on top of a balance and zero the device
- Pour liquid into the beaker to determine the mass
- Pour the same liquid into a measurong cyclinder and read off the volume
- Use density = mass/volume to calculate density
