Q

What is the world wide web?

A

Open-source information that anyone can access (key moment where democratization of GIS started to happen)
Even now not everyone has equal access (eg., slow wifi)

9
Q

pre-existing maps versus custom-tailored maps?

A
  • completed by map maker before viewing on website (eg., JPEG uploaded online)
  • users have some control of cartographic process (eg., choose data shown, scale, and limited design elements)

Q

Distributed versus user-contributed data?

A

Distributed: go to portal and use what they give you (eg., federal agencies, Open Data portals)

user- contributed: crowdsourcing, user generated content, crowd mapping, Volunteered Geographic Information Systems

Q

Key characteristics of web mapping platforms

A
  • Beyond just interacting with a map online
  • It is a toolkit that helps you build a web mapping application
  • does not need to be installed on the local computer

Q

Google maps: API

A
  • An application Programming Interface (API) is a set of methods and tools that can be used from building software applications
  • Google maps API allows you to display maps on your website
  • From limited functionality (and mostly free) to the foundation of multi-million dollar business

Q

Other web mapping platforms

A

MangoMap: very easy to use, no coding required. Lots of tools and functionality available to make potential map applications

GISCloud: Online alternative to traditional client/server GIS setup. Many features but hampered by frustrating user interface

MapBox: Programmer focused. Great for maps that need to fit a brand and be able to scale high traffic. Good for consumer internet sites

17
Q

Desktop GIS

A
  • ArcGIS Desktop, the industry leading proprietary GIS software, developed by ESRI - The Environmental Systems Research Institute
  • Licenses cost thousand of dollars
  • Need a powerful computer to run efficiently
18
Q

Open-source Desktop GIS

A
  • Must be installed

- Free, editable, addable - like Wikipedia

19
Q

Summary

A

Lots of options for web and open source GIS solutions

  • some for casual/novice users - black-box
  • some power users - programming experience
