Topic 1.3: Vectors and Scalars Flashcards
What are scalar measurements?
Measurements that only includes size (magnitude)
e.g., distance, mass, speed, energy, pressure
What are vector measurements?
Measurements that include size (magnitude) and direction
e.g., force, displacement, velocity, acceleration
What are component vectors?
Vectors that follow each other
They also make up resultant vectors
What are resultant vectors?
Vectors that go in the opposite direction to each other
Are made of component vectors
What is the rule that allows vectors to be ressolved?
Any vector can be turned into 2 component vectors at 90 degrees to each other
What do you have to do when drawing free body diagrams?
Show all forces acting on a body to correct scale and direction
What type of measurement do you get if you multiply a vector and a scalar?
A vector
e.g., acceleration * mass = force
