Topic 12 - Magnetism & The Motor Effect Flashcards
1
Q
Uses of Permanent Magnets:
A
- Motor
- Speaker
- Transformer
2
Q
Uses of Temporary Magnets:
A
- Medical Devices (cobalt)
- Fridge Magnets
- Electromagnets
3
Q
Permanent Magnets:
A
- Magnetic properties without needing any external influence
4
Q
Temporary Magnets:
A
- Magnetic properties temporarily when placed in a magnetic field
5
Q
The use of compasses to show the shape of the Earth’s magnetic field:
A
- On a compass, north goes to the north pole because that is the earth geological south pole
6
Q
Explain how the behaviour of a magnetic compass is related to evidence that the core of the Earth must be magnetic
A
- The core of the Earth is primarily composed of iron and nickel
7
Q
What causes magnetic forces?
A
- Interactions between magnetic fields
8
Q
The Motor Effect
A
- When current acts on coil in a magnetic field, a force acts, and rotates the coil
- Split Ring Commutator changes current direction every half turn in the coil, so current keeps traveling in the same direction.
