Topic 12 - Formation of Planetary Systems Flashcards
Tides
Attraction between two objects where things not fixed in place will bulge in the direction of the attraction.
Lagrange Points
Positions in space where the gravitation forces of two a two body system produce points where objects can remain easily fixed in position.
How did Uranus become tilted
It was hit by a rouge object in space
Solar Wind impact the atmospheres
Solar wind ‘blows away’ the atmosphere of planets with weaker gravity
Forces within an object
Tidal forces cause it to stretch and elastic forces hold it together
Roche Limit
The minimum distance a smaller object will be from a larger one before it gets ripped apart by gravity
Relation between gravitational forces and elastic forces
If the forces are equal the object will be a sphere otherwise it will be non-spherical
What happens if a planet is too hot
The gases in the atmosphere can escape
