Topic 12- Electric & Magnetic Fields Flashcards
What is a magnet?
Any material or object that produces magnetic field (i.e. bar & horse-shoe magnet & earth)
What do all magnets have in common?
- Have two poles (north & south)
- Surrounded by a magnetic field
What are field lines?
Arrows u draw around your magnet from north pole to south Pole (represents magnetic fields)
Advantages of representing a magnetic with field lines
- Shows where the field is & which direction it is acting in
- Shows relative strength of field in different places
How can we tell if a magnetic field is much stronger?
The field lines will be closer together
How can we find the poles & field lines using a compass?
In compass there’s bar magnet - always line up with the field lines or whatever magnetic field its put in
Always points towards south pole of a magnet
