Topic 11: Equilibria II Flashcards
What is the only factor that can effect the value of Kc?
Temperature
What should we remember when writing equilibrium constants for heterogeneous reactions
Solids are not present in the equation as the conc of a solid at a given temp is determined by its density which has a constant value
What does partial pressure mean ?
The partial pressure of a gas in a mixture of gases is the pressure that the gas would exert if it alone occupied the same volume as the mixture
Give the equation for the Kp equilibrium constant
(Cp)^w (Dp)^x
Kp = ———————-
(Ap)^y (Bp)^z
How do you calculate the partial pressure of an individual gas in a mixture of gases
Partial pressure = mole fraction x total pressure
How do you calculate the mole fraction
number of moles of A
Mole fraction of A = —————————————-
total number of moles of gas
What does Q represent in equilibria
The numerical value of the equilibrium expression when the reaction is not in equilibrium
If Q is greater than Kc (Q>Kc) deduce which direction the reaction will shift to restore equilibrium
Left (backwards direction)
If Q is less than than Kc (Q<Kc) deduce which direction the reaction will shift to restore equilibrium
Right (forwards direction)
