What is a value?
General principles for how we should live our lives, what is good or bad or right and wrong
What is a norm?
Expected behaviours and actions within a specified space or society
What is a moral code?
Sets of basic rules, values and principles held by individuals, groups, organisations or societies as a whole
What is deviance?
Any behaviour that differs from normal
What are the three types of deviance?
Unusual and good
Unusual and bizarre
Bad and disapproved of
What is a sanction?
A form of social control in society
What is a formal sanction?
A sanction imposed by official bodies for breaking formal laws
What is an informal sanction?
A sanction imposed by societies/individuals where a person has broken an unspoken rule
What is a positive sanction?
Rewards for behaviour that society approves of
What is criminal behaviour?
A form of deviance that involves harmful acts that are wrong against individuals or society
What is the legal definition of criminal behaviour?
Behaviour deemed by the state to be illegal and at risk of punishment
What is the social definition of criminal behaviour?
Behaviour or an activity that society deems to be criminal
What does every offence contain?
Actus reus (guilty act)
Mens rea (guilty mind)
What are strict liability offences?
They do not require any mens rea for a defendant to be guilty
They exist as a way of protecting society as a whole
What is a summary offence?
Less serious offences that are tried in a magistrate court
