Topic 10 - Species and Taxonomy Flashcards
Binomial system - Genus
generic name - equivalent to a surname (Homo)
Binomial system - species
Specific name - equivalent to a first name (Sapien)
Artificial classification
classification according to analogous (having wings) characteristics. Have the same function but different evolutionary origins
Phylogenetic classification
Based on evolutionary relationships between organisms and their ancestors. Classifies using shared homologous characteristics (similar evolutionary origins)
Species definition
2 organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
Taxonomic rank
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Habitat
A place where a community of organisms usually lives
Community
All the populations of different organisms interacting in a particular place at the same time
Eco-System
All the living and non-living components if a specific area
Biodiversity
The number and variety of living organisms in a particular area
Species diversity
the number of different species and number of individuals of those species within a community
Genetic diversity
differences in the DNA/genes possessed by the individuals in any one species
Eco-System diveristy
the range of different habitats within a specified area
species richness
the number of different species present
Simpsons diversity index
d = diversity index
N = total no. of organisms of all species
n = total no. of organisms of each species
{ = sum of
