Topic 10: key words Flashcards
Ecosystem
the interaction of biotic and abiotic factors
Biosphere
the total area of the Earth and atmosphere that is inhabited by living organisms
Habitat
a division of the biosphere with its own unique characteristics and conditions
Population
a group of members of the same species that interact with each other
Community
a group of populations of different species interacting in the same habitat
Food chain
shows the feeding relationships of organisms in an ecosystem
Food web
shows how interconnected and complex the feeding levels are in an ecosystem
Trophic levels
the number of energy transfers an organism is from the primary energy source
Biomass
the dry mass of living material in each organism x the total number of organisms in that trophic level
Gross primary productivity
the total amount of energy fixed through photosynthesis in a given period of time
net primary productivity
the total amount of energy fixed through photosynthesis in a given period of time which remains available for the next trophic levels
nitrifying bacteria
convert decomposers into nitrates
nitrogen fixing bacteria
convert inert N2 gas into ammonia
