Agriculture : Declining Exports
Europe could not afford US food after the war
-Increased tariffs meant US goods were overpriced

-New technology in the 1910s meant food was being produces quicker than it was being consumed

-Struggled to compete with Canadian Wheat Market which had more efficient technology and did not have export taxes.

- By 1921 agricultural produce had fallen in value by 50%
- In 1924, 600,000 farms closed
- Changing tastes changed popularity of produce

- 90% fall in demand for barley
- Bushel of wheat fell in price from $2.50 in 1920 to $1 in 1929
Construction workers
-Only a 4% average wage despite new movements such as art deco
African Americans
- Lots of low-skill agriculture jobs were lost due to new technology
- 750,000 lost their jobs in the 1920s
- Many also worked in agriculture
Immigrants
- New technology meant many were replaced in low-skill jobs
- Wages cut
Women
- Only made up 23% of the workforce in the 1920s
- Often reduced to low-skill jobs
