Topic 1 : Water Flashcards
Kinetic Particle Theory
All matter is made up of tiny particles (i.e. atoms, ions, molecules). There are attractive forces between the particles. The particles are in constant and random motion
Electron
Negative charged particle located outside the nucleus
Proton
Positively charged particle, located in the nucleus
Neutron
No charge, similar in mass to a proton, located in the nucleus
Nucleus
Central core made of protons & neutron, has a positive charge
Electron Shell
Orbitals that contain various levels of energy that only contain electrons
Lattice - Crystalline Structure
3D structure of atoms, is made of 2 or more molecules that are different sizes. They are held together by ionic bonds
Element
Substance that cannot be broken down into a smaller substance
Compound
Substance containing two or more elements chemically bonded together
Atom
Smallest particle an element can be divided into
Molecule
Group of atoms covalently bonded together
Atomic Number
Number of protons contained in the nucleus of the atom
Covalent Bonds
Mutual sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms
Ionic Bonds
Forms when an atom/molecule loses electron(s) from its outer shell, becoming positively charged and is attracted to the newly formed negative ion (the atom/molecule that gained the electron(s)).
Positive Ion
Contains more protons than electrons
Negative Ion
Contains more electrons than protons
