Topic 1: Vocabulary Flashcards
Homogenous Mixture
Uniform composition: the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample.
Heterogenous Mixture
Un-uniform composition: proportions of its components are different throughout a given sample.
Distillation
The process of purifying a mixture through 2 substances having different boiling points. Boiling the one with the lower boiling point and condensing boiled off substance in a flask.
Recrystallization
dissolving impure substance and then recrystallizing it (making sure that everything is enclosed), then filtering the impurities out.
Filtration
Using filter to dissolve solid from a solution
Solvation
2 solids (1 soluble the other isnt soluble). Dissolving soluble one in water and then filtering out the unsoluble.
Evaporation
Evaporating liquid. (pretty straight forward, ain’t it?)
Paper chromatography.
Based on the affinity (towards the solution and whether it had a mobility or stationary affinity) will dedictate how far the ink(eg) would move up a paper. Mobil affinity to solution will lead it further down the paper (follows the solution till the tip to where the paper absorbs the solution) & vice versa.
Desposition/ desublimation
Transformation from Gas to solid without intersect with the liquid stage.
sublimation
Transformation from Solid to gas without intersect with the liquid stage.
Melt
from Solid to Liquid
Freeze
Liquid to Solid
Boil
Liquid to Gas
condensation
Gas to Liquid
aqueous solution
a solution in which the solvent is water
