Topic 1 - Visible light and the solar system Flashcards
What are the two models of the solar system, and what is the difference between them?
Heliocentric, the sun is at the centre of our solar system, Geocentric, the Earth is at the centre of our solar system
What model of the solar system did the Greeks believe in and who came up with that theory?
The Geocentric model where everything orbits the Earth and the person who came up with the theory was Ptolemy
What model of the solar system replaced the Geocentric model and who came up with that theory and who proved it?
The Heliocentric model, and it was Copernicus who came up with the idea of the Heliocentric model and Galileo proved his theory
What are the two formulas for wave speed?
Speed = Frequency * Wavelength
(m/s) = (Hz) * (m)
or
Wave speed = distance / time
(m/s) = (m) / (s)
What are the 4 things waves have?
Wavelength, Frequency, Amplitude and Speed
What do the 4 things waves have mean?
Wavelength - Distance between one peak to the next peak
Frequency - How many complete wave pass a fixed point per second and it is measured in Hertz (Hz)
Amplitude - The height of the wave
Speed - How fast the wave is travelling
What are the two types of waves?
Longitudinal and Transverse
Explain what they both are?
Transverse - In transverse waves the vibrations are at 90o to the direction of travel of the wave
Longitudinal - In longitudinal waves the vibrations are along the same direction as the wave is travelling
What is reflection?
