Topic 1 - Visible Light and the Solar System Flashcards
What is the wavelength ?
Distance from one peak to the next
What we the two names of the models of the universe ?
Geocentric
Heliocentric
What is the frequency ?
Number of complete waves per second . Hz
What is the amplitude?
Height of wavelength from mid point
What are the equations to work out speed and wave speed
Speed = frequency x Wavelength
Wave speed = distance / time
What is a transverse wave?
1) The vibrations are at 90* to the Direction of travel
2) They can be light and all other EM waves
3) They are S Waves
What is a Longitudinal Wave?
It vibrates(ossilates) the same direction as the wave is travelling
They can be Sound and ultrasound waves
They can be P waves
What is reflection ?
Have a mirror and converging lens which goes to a large convex mirror that collects the parallel rays from distant objects like stars
What is refraction ?
It has 2 converging lenses an the real image is formed at the focal point
What is the difference between a real image and a virtual image?
Real image = is actually there, image on a screen and is upside down
Virtual Image = image is not actually there, light appears to look from different place
What is the focal point?
Rays hit the lens parallel to the axis all meet
What is a refracting telescope ?
Uses 2 converging lenses
Objective lens then converges these rays to form a real image at the focal point of the objective lens
What is a reflecting telescope?
Uses mirrors and a converging lens
A large concave mirror collects the parallel rays of light from an object in space
