Topic 1 The Nature Of Matter Flashcards
What is Chemistry?
The study of the nature, properties and transformation of matter.
What is Matter?
Anything that has mass and occupies space.
What are Physical Changes?
Changes that do not affect the chemical makeup of a substance or object.
What are Chemical Changes?
Changes during which chemical bonds are broken and/or formed.
What are Atoms?
Building blocks of Matter composed of neutrons, potons and electrons.
How many Elements have been identified?
118
What determines the size of an atom?
Electrons.
What determines the weight of an atom?
Its nucleus.
What is a Molecule?
The smallest particles that retain all the properties of a substance, composed of two or more atoms.
What are two types of Covalent Bonds?
Polar and non-polar.
What are Cations?
Positively charged ions.
What are Anions?
Negatively charged ions.
How are ions formed?
The addition or removal of one or more electrons.
What are Compounds?
Substances made up of two or more elements.
What configuration do all elements want to achieve?
Noble Gas configuration.
A full electron shell and neutral charge.
