Topic 1 - Self-Examination Flashcards
In 2 Corinthians 13:5
The Corinthians were called to examine and test themselves to see if they really were Christians. Just as we get physical checkups, Paul urges us to give ourselves spiritual checkups. We should look for a growing awareness of Christ’s presence and power in our lives. Then will we know if we are true Christians or merely impostors. If we’re not actively seeking to grow closer to God, we are drawing farther away from him..
2 Corinthians 13:5
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith.
2 Corinthians 13:5
5Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
Paul gives specific instructions on how the Lord’s Supper should be observed.
(1) We should take the Lord’s Supper thoughtfully because we are proclaiming that Christ died for our sins (11:26).
(2) We should take it worthily, with due reverence and respect (11:27).
(3) We should examine ourselves for any unconfessed sin or resentful attitude and be properly prepared
1 Corinthians 11:28
But let a man examine himself,
1 Corinthians 11:28
28But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
God’s people continued to sin even though they had the law, the prophets of God, and a history replete with God’s miracles. How could they do that? Why do we continue in sin even though we understand the eternal consequences? Jeremiah says the heart is deceitful (17:9). The Hebrews symbolized The heart as the place of reason, intelligence, and will. So deep is our tendency to sin that only God can deliver us.
Jeremiah 17:9
The heart is deceitful above all things,
Jeremiah 17:9
9“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
