Topic 1 (production): DP 1:(5) Identify polyethylene as an addition polymer and explain the meaning of this term Flashcards
What is addition polymerisation?
Polymerisation in which no additional molecules are produced – there is no loss or gain of atoms, the
double bond opens which joins monomers to make a polymer
What is an addition reaction?
A reaction in which one bond in the double bond is broken and
the 2 atoms in a diatomic molecule are added on
What are the 4 types of addition reactions?
- Hydrogenation
- Hydration
- Halogenation
- Hydro halogenation
What is Hydrogenation?
Hydrogen is reacted with ethylene. The product is ethane.
What is Hydration polymerisation?
Ethylene is reacted with water, using phosphoric acid as a catalyst, to produce ethanol
What is Halogenation?
Reactive molecules from the halogen group (Fl2, Cl2 & Br2) can all react with ethylene
What is hydro halogenation?
A hydro halogen (HCl or HFl) an ethylene react to form halo-ethane.
