Topic 1: Overview Of The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the primary four functions of the nervous system?
1) sensory
2) integration
3) action
4) information storage
What are the sensory function attributes?
To sense internal and external environmental changes
What are the integration function attributes?
To interpret environmental changes and create suitable responses
What are the attributes of the action function of the nervous system?
To control motor movements, endocrine and glandular secretions, and homeostasis
What are the two primary divisions of the Nervous System?
The Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System
CNS and PNS
What are the primary components of the CNS?
The brain and spinal cord
What are the components of the PNS?
Cranial and spinal nerves connecting the CNS to the rest of the body
What is the function of Afferent (Sensory) Nerves?
To conduct impulses from somatic or visceral receptors to the CNS
What is the function of Efferent(Motor) nerves?
To conduct impulses from the CNS to the effectors
What is the function of the Somatic nervous System?
To conduct voluntary impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscles
What is the function of the Autonomic Nervous System?
To conduct involuntary impulses from the CNS to the cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, and glands
What is the difference between the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System?
The Sympathetic stimulates organs during stress whereas the Parasympathetic stimulates organs for normal functioning
What is the definition of Visceral?
Visceral: Referring to the viscera, the internal organs of the body, specifically those within the chest (as the heart or lungs) or abdomen (as the liver, pancreas or intestines)
What is the definition of Somatic?
Relating to the body or body wall; distinct from the viscera, head, and limbs
What is the Perikaryon?
The nucleus-enclosing body of a neuron
