Topic 1 - Organic Intro Flashcards
Key terms to remember
Define a functional group
The atom or group of atoms that is responsible for most of the chemical reactions of a molecule
Define a homologous series
A family of compounds with the same general formula and similar chemical properties.
How do members of a homologous series differ?
The addition of CH2 and a gradual change in physical properties.
Define a hydrocarbon
A molecule containing hydrogen and carbon only.
Define saturated
The molecule contains only carbon - carbon single bonds
Define structural isomers
Molecules with the same molecular formula but different structures
Define chain isomers
Structural isomers that differ by having a different carbon chain
Define position isomers
Structural isomers that differ by having the functional group in a different position
Define functional group isomers
Structural isomers that differ by having a different functional group
Define (Geometric) E-Z isomers
Isomers that have a different arrangement of groups around a C=C
Define stereoisomers
Molecules with the same molecular and structural formula but a different spatial arrangement of atoms.
