Topic 1 - Motion Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity?
Only have magnitude and no direction
Examples of scalar quantities: (4)
Speed, mass, distance, energy
What are vector quantities?
Have a magnitude and a direction
Examples of vector quantities: (6)
Force, displacement, momentum, velocity, acceleration, weight
What is distance?
-scalar
-how far an object has moved (not including its direction)
What is displacement?
-vector
- the distance and direction in a straight line from an objects start point to finish point
What is speed?
- scalar
- how fast you’re going with no regard for direction
What is velocity?
-vector
-speed in a certain direction
What is acceleration?
The change in the velocity in a certain amount of time
Typical speed - walking
1.5 m/s
Typical speed - running
3 m/s
Typical speed - cycling
5.5 m/s
Typical speed - car
13 m/s
Typical speed - car (motorway)
30 m/s
Typical speed - train
Up to 55 m/s
