Topic 1 Levers and Incline Planes Flashcards
What are Levers
A simple machine that changes the amount of force you need to put on an object to move that object
What is the fulcrum
The fixed point on a lever, the rotational point.
What is the Effort Force
The force exerted on a lever to make it move.
What is the Load
The mass of an object lifted by the lever.
What is the Effort Arm
The distance between the fulcrum and effort force.
What is the Load Arm
The distance between the fulcrum and the load
What is a Class 1 lever
Fulcrum is at the CENTER ex; Tetter-totter
What is a Class 2 Lever
Load is at the center Wheel Barrow
What is a Class 3 Lever
Effort is at the center ex; Hockey Stick
What is Work
The product of the force exerted times the distance moved and is measured in Joules.
W= F xD
What is a inclined plane
a ramp or slope that reduces the force needed to lift something
What is input work
The work you do on a machine
What is output work
The work the machine does on the load
What is Mechanical Advantage
The comparison of the force produced by a machine to the force applied to the machine
What are ergonomics
The science of designing machines to suit people.
