Topic 1 - Key Concepts In Biology Flashcards
What’s on a plant call ?
Plant cell = nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall , chloroplasts , mitochondria, vacuale , ribosome
What’s on an Animal cell ?
Nucleus, cell membrane, ribosome , mitochondria
What is the difference between a plant cell and animal cell ?
Animal cell has no cell wall or chloroplast
How is a sperm cell adapted to its function ?
- Mitochondria and a tail
- Acrosome
- Haploid nucleus
How is an egg cell adapted?
- Haploid nucleus
- Nutrients in the cytoplasm
- Changing in cell membrane after fertilisation
- Arrow shaped head
What are the 2 types of cells
Prokaryotic and eukayriotic
What do bacterial cells not have ?
A nucleus
What are enzymes ?
Catalysts produced by living things
What is a Catalyst ?
A substance which increases the speed of a reaction without being changed or being used up
What does every enzyme have ?
A active site
What does a substrate do with an enzyme ?
It fits in the active site
What does an enzyme need to be right for the substrate to fit
- Right temp
- Right ph
- Right substrate concentration
What enzyme breaks down starch ?
Amylase enzymes
What enzymes break down proteins ?
Protease enzymes
What’s enzyme breaks down lipids
Lipase enzyme
Define diffusion ?
The movement of particles for a high concentration area to a lower concentration area
Define active transport ?
The movement of particles from a low concentration area to a high concentration area
Define osmosis
The movement of moloceaus across a partially permeable surface from a high concentration area to a lownone
Nucleus characteristics ?
- Contains genetic material
- Genetic material arranged into chromosomes
Mitochondria :
Where aerobic representation takes place
Cell membrane :
Holds cell together and controls what goes in and out
Cytoplasm :
Gel like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen
Ribosome :
These are involved in translation of genetic material
Chloropasts :
This is where photosynthesis takes place which makes food to the plant
