Topic 1 - Introduction to the Scientific Process Flashcards
Systems Biology
The exploration of a biological system by analyzing the interactions among its parts.
Hypothesis
An explanation- a tentative answer to a well framed questioned
Data
Recorded Observations
Quantitative and qualitative
Observation
Instance of viewing or noting a fact
Dependent Variable
Variable that is going to be measured in the experiment
Independent Variable
The variable whose value can be changes during an experiment to reveal effects on other variables
Prediction
In deductive reasoning, a forecast that follows logically from a hypothesis. Testing predictions, experiments may allows certain hypothesis to be rejected.
Theory
An explanation that is broader in scope than a hypothesis, generates new hypothesis, and is supported by a large body of evidence.
Controlled experiment
An experiment in which an experimental group is compared to a control group that varies only in the factor being tested.
Spurious Relationship
A relationship that does not result from any direct relationship
Correlation
Relationship where things happen or change together.
Emergent Properties
Properties that arise to due the arrangement and interaction of parts as the complexity of the system increases.
