Global change
Human induced transforma0on of the global environment /the results of human ac0vi0es on the environment which is felt across the planet.
Environment
the range of external conditons, physical and biotic, in which an organism lives, including soil, water, climate and food supply. It includes social, cultural, and (for humans) economic and political considerations.
* It is believed that humans are separate from the environment. This could be part of why we are dealing with the challenges we do today.
Institutions
elemental structures require for the func0oning of a society. Ins0tu0ons embody the values, norms, and roles that a society behaves to be essen0al for its existence. But these values brought us to the global issues we deal with today. It is unrealis0c that the same ins0tu0ons will be able to get us out of these problems.

List common characteristics of global issues
- Have a global or large-scale regional effects.
- Are persistent (multi-generational).
- Can result in dramatic events or series of events that capture world-wide attention (wildfires,
droughts). - Have many moving parts that are interconnected and have complex interac0ons.
- Are interconnected to other global issue.
- No simple solu0ons.
- Need meaningful solu0ons based on interdisciplinary knowledge.
- Expose the interdependence between countries and regions. Must work together as our
individuals’ ac0ons or no ac0ons affect everyone. - Requires solu0ons that include trade-offs.
- Challenge the status quo in world order and global ins0tu0ons.
- our survival as a society and species depends on solving these problems.
