Topic 1: Interfacing brain and body Flashcards
What are the three compression mechanisms, and what illusions do they cause
1) Spatial inhibition -> simultaneous contrast illusions
2) Temporal inhibition - > After effect illusions
3) Filling in -> the craik o brian
What causes spatial inhibition?
- Signals that stay the same over space
- Lateral inhibition of spatial inhibitor cells disables action potentials of neighbouring cells
During spatial inhibition, is adaptation fast or slow?
Fast adaptation
What does lateral inhibition cause?
Causes a greater contrast between stonger and weaker signals
Where does tactile inhibition occur?
Upstream in the spinal cord
What causes temporal inhibition?
- Temporal inhibitors turn off cells that have been active for a while
For temporal inhibition, is adaptation slow or fast?
Slow adaptation - takes time to build up and fade away
How does filling in work?
- Edges convey information and brain fills in the rest
- Spreads excitation from the edge detecting cells to neighbouring cells
For filling in, does it increase or decrease energy expenditure of the brain?
Increase
