Topic #1-Fossil Fuels to Plastic Flashcards
How are Fossil Fuels Formed?
Fossil Fuels like Oil+Natural Gas come from algae. This algae (Plankton) when put under pressure it is converted to Kerogen and then when it is put under heat+pressure, it becomes oil and natural gas (fossil fuels)
How are Fossil Fuels Extracted? (Explain Fracking)
Fossil Fuels are extracted through a process called Fracking. Fracking is a technique where you find gas rich layers and you drill into the earth. Then, you take chemicals+water and pump it under pressure to crack the rock and take the gas from it. Then from here it is usually brought to a facility.
What is Crude Oil?
Crude Oil, is a thick liquid that makes up oil in the ground.
What is Fractional Distillation?
This is a process where crude oil is separated to make useful oils
Step One of Crude Oil Refining…
Before, it was just useless long chains of hydrocarbons
1. First it is boiled. (this is when a liquid becomes a gas) if it has a low boiling point it will rise to the top
Step Two, Three, and Four of Crude Oil Refining
2.It is separated into different sections Petrol (gasoline), Naphtha (plastic), Kerosine (jet), Diesel (heating), Lubricating Oil (oil, wax), Fuel, residue (bitumen for roads)
3. Becomes different substance
4. Is treated!!
How are Fossil Fuels converted to plastic?
Fossil Fuels are converted to plastic under high pressure
