Topic 1 - (energy) Flashcards
List the 9 energy stores:
- nuclear
- Thermal
- light
- sound
- electrical
- gravitational potential
- kinetic
- chemical
- elastic potential
List the 4 energy transfers:
- mechanically
- electrically
- by heating
- by radiation (light or sound)
What are the energy stores and transfers of a PENDULUM?
GRAVITATIONAL energy - (MECHANICALLY) - KINETIC energy. Then back to GRAVITATIONAL energy - (MECHANICALLY). Also LOSES some THERMAL energy due to friction with the air
What will happen when you put 2 objects of different temperatures together?
They will eventually become the same temperature because heat is transferred from the object with the lower temperature, to the object with the higher temperature
What happens to the particles during conduction?
The heat energy causes the particles to VIBRATE. The vibrations pass along to eachother, making the object heat up.
Conduction is an energy transfer between…..?
SOLIDS
Convection is an energy transfer in…..?
LIQUIDS
Describe the 4 stages of convection:
1) The particles begin to VIBRATE needing more room
2) They become less dense, meaning they rise up to the top
3) The denser particles at the top begin to sink down as they are being replaced by the less dense particles.
4) this cycle keeps going and is called CONVECTION
What are the 3 ways of transferring energy?
- conduction
- convection
- radiation
What is radiation?
When energy is transferred as waves
Is burning fossil fuels a renewable way of generating electricity?
NOOOOOO
