Topic 1 - Energy Flashcards
Name the 8 energy stores.
Thermal
Gravitational potential
Elastic potential
Magnetic
Chemical

Kinetic
Give 4 waves energy can be transferred.
- Mechanically
- Electrically
- Through heating via infrared radiation
- Via light or sound waves
Describe what it means by magnetic energy store?
The energy stored when repelling poles have been pushed together or when attracting poles have been pulled further apart
What does it mean by internal energy store?
The total kinetic energy and potential energy of the particles in an object
In hotter objects the particles have more internal energy and vibrate faster
What does it mean by chemical energy store?
The energy stored in chemical bonds such as those between molecules.
What does it mean by kinetic energy store?
Energy of a moving object
What does it mean by electrostatic energy
The energy stored when repelling charges have been moved closer together or when attracting charges have been pulled further apart.
What is elastic potential energy store?
The energy stored when an object is stretched or squashed
What is gravitational potential energy store?
The energy of an object at height.
What is nuclear energy store?
The energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
What is the relationship between work done and energy transferred?
Word done = energy transferred
They are the same
What is dissipation?
A term to describe ways in which energy is wasted
Any energy that is not transferred to useful energy stores is said to be wasted and it is lost into the surroundings.
How is energy wasted by friction?
Word is done against friction which causes heating of the two surfaces so the thermal energy is increased.
How do we reduce energy wasted by friction?
Lubricating components to reduce friction
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy can be transferred, stored or dissipated but it cannot be created or destroyed
