Chief of the local officials and often Privy Councillors, one per county

Maintained law and peace on a daily/local basis, wealthy gentleman who went unpaid for the work; voluntary position
What was the role of the Sheriff?
Role which was becoming outdated and replaced by Justices of the Peace; sorted apprenticeships and looked after the poor.
