Topic 1 - Distance, Speed and Acceleration Flashcards
What is velocity?
Speed in a given direction
What does vector mean?
A quantity that has size and direction
What does speed mean?
A measure of how fast or slow something is moving
What does scalar mean?
A quantity that only has size (magnitude)
Describe the acceleration in a velocity-time graph that is curving?
Mark 1 - the acceleration is decreasing/increasing over time
Mark 2 - find the gradient of the start and end of the curve to find the average acceleration
What is kinetic energy?
The amount of energy a moving object has due to its mass and velocity
What is stopping distance?
Distance travelled by a moving vehicle when the driver is thinking about thinking + braking distance
What is thinking distance?
Distance travelled by a moving vehicle when the driver is thinking about applying the brakes
Braking distance
Distance travelled by a moving vehicle when the brakes have been applied
Factors affecting thinking distance
- Tiredness
- Alcohol/Drugs
- Distractions
- Speed
Factors affecting Braking distance
- Tyres
- The Condition of the Brakes
- Speed
- Conditions of the Road
- Weather (dry or wet)
Units for acceleration
metres/seconds squared
Velocity units
metres/seconds
