Topic 1 - Development of the Periodic table Flashcards
How were elements arranged before the discovery of subatomic particles?
In order of their atomic mass
What was the problem with ordering the periodic table in terms of mass?
Elements ended up being placed in the wrong places.
What did Dmitri Mendeleev do with the periodic table?
He switched the order in some cases so the elements with similar properties could be in groups together. Also, he left gaps for elements that had not been discovered yet.
What did the discovery of isotopes do for the table?
It showed that Mendeleev was right to not order elements based on their atomic masses.
Name 2 physical properties of the metals of the periodic table
Strong, malleable, great conductors, high boiling/melting points.
Name 2 physical properties of non metals in the periodic table.
Dull looking, brittle, aren’t always solids at room temp, don’t generally conduct electricity, lower density.
Name properties of transition metals which don’t apply to normal metals
Have more than one ion, coloured, make good catalysts, higher boiling points.
How do transition metals react with oxygen compared with group 1 elements?
They react more slowly with oxygen.
How do transition metals react with water compared with group 1 elements?
They react slowly with water.
