Topic 1 chemistry Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is a mixture?
A substance made from two or more different substances that can be separated.
What is solvent?
A liquid that a solid can dissolve into.
What is solute?
A solid that is dissolved in a solution.
What is a solution?
A liquid with a solid dissolved in it.
What is dissolve?
When a solid splits up and mixes with a liquid to make a solution.
What is compound?
A substance made up of two or more types of atoms chemically joined together.
What is pure?
A substance made up of only one element or one compound.
What is a mixture?
A substance made up of two or more types of atoms or chemically joined together.
What is an element?
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
Solid.
The particles are always touching and there is no space between them. They have a regular arrangement.
Liquid.
These particles are touched and not touched there is a little space in between them, not a lot though. They are randomly arranged.
Gas.
The particles here do not touch there is a lot of space between them. They are randomly arranged.
Chromatography.
This is used to separate a mixture of soluble substance.
