Topic 1 - Characteristics Of Life, Organisation And Cells Flashcards
Cell membrane
Controls which substance can pass in and out of the cell
Nucleus
Contains DNA and controls the cells activity
Cytoplasm
A gel-like substance where most of the cells chemical reactions take place. It also contains enzymes
Mitochondria
Small organelles where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration takes place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work
Ribosomes
Small organelles where proteins are made in the cell
Cell wall (plant cell only)
Made of cellulose and supports the cell and strengthens it
Vacuole (plant cell only)
Contains SAP (a weak solution of sugars and salts) it helps support the cell
Chloroplast (plant cell only)
It makes food for the plant. It has a green substance called chlorophyll which is used in photosynthesis
