Topic 1 :cells - Key Words Flashcards
Magnification
The number of times greater the size of the image is than the actual size of the object
Resolution
The minimum distance apart two objects can be in order for them to appear as two separate items
Fractionation
The process of breaking apart cells and separating their contents (including organelles) by homogenization and ultracentrifugation
Eukaryotic
A cell that contains a membrane -bound nucleus and other membrane bound organelles.
Prokaryotic
A cell that does not contain a nucleus (or any membrane-bound organelles). Bacteria are prokaryotes.
Virus
An acellular, non living particle. These contain DNA or RNA held within a capsid but can only multiply inside a living host cell
Nucleus
An organelle in eukaryotes that contain DNA in the form of protein bound linear chromosomes (chromatin) and a nucleolus surrounded by a nuclear envelope.
Differentiation
The process by which cells become specialised for different functions
Interphase
A stage in the cell cycle when DNA replication occurs that takes place before mitosis (or meiosis).
mitosis
A type of nuclear division in which two identical daughter cells are produced. Includes the stages prophase, metaphase anaphase and telophase
