Federal government
a level of government that deals with matters that concern the nation as a whole. An area of responsibility is defence for the nation.
Judicial Function
judging if the Rules have been broken and what should happen to those who broke the rules.
Coalition
two or more political parties work together for a common purpose for example the Liberal and National parties.
Democracy
a system of government by the people in which representatives are elected. The citizens, or members of a state or nation, have a say in what laws government passes and what decisions are made.
House of Representative
is the lower house in Australia’s Commonwealth Parliament. There are 151 representatives elected by the Australian people. The house in which government is formed.
Local Government
Level of government concerned with matters that affect the local community. An area of responsibility is collection rubbish for the resident of the Mornington Shire.
Opposition
formed by the largest party (or parties in coalition) that does not have the support of the majority of representatives in the lower house in parliament.
political party
is a group of people that hold similar values and beliefs. They represent a certain political view. For example the National Party represents the issues and concerns of regional communities.
The Premier
is the leader of the political party that has the majority in the Legislative Assembly in Victorian State Parliament.
The Prime Minister
is the leader of the political party that has the majority in the House of Representatives.
The Senate
is the upper house in Australia’s Commonwealth Parliament. There are 76 representatives elected, 12 from each of the six states and two from each territory.
State Government
the Level of government concerned with matters that affect the citizens of a state. An area of responsibility is Education for students in Victoria.
crown
Australia’s head of state. Provides royal assent to proposed laws passed by both houses of parliament. Represented by the Governor General at Federal and the Governor at State level.
Electorate
a geographical area consisting of approximately 100,000 voters who vote for one representative. An example of this is the Federal electorate of Finders
Governor-General
represents the Queen at a federal level.
