Topic 1 Flashcards
What are the 8 different types of stores of Energy?
Thermal energy Kinetic energy Gravitational potential energy Elastic potential energy Chemical energy Magnetic energy Nuclear energy Electrostatic energy
What is another phrase for Work done?
Energy transferred
What is the equation for Kinetic Energy?
E= O.5 x M(Kg) x Vsquared(M/s)squared
What is the equation for Gravitational potential energy?
Gpe = M(Kg) x G(Gravitational field strength) x H(Height,m)
What is the Equation for Elastic Potential energy?
Ee=0.5 x K(Spring constant N/m) x e(squared, extension,m.)
What is Specific Heat Capacity?
It is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1’C
What does the law of conservation of Energy state?
Energy cannot be created of destroyed
What is a system?
It is an object or group of objects
What does friction cause?
It causes energy to be transferred into thermal energy?
What do scientists call energy which can be wasted called?
Dissipated
What are the two main ways of Reducing friction?
Using lubricants e.g oil
Remove the air particles
Where does conduction take place in?
Solids especially metals
Why does heat move through conduction?
This is because particles are very closed together so heat vibrations can easily pass through.
What is Insulation?
Reduce heat movement by conduction
What states does Convection happen in?
Liquids and Gases
How does convection work?
You heat the liquid, then particles gain heat, then the particles move further apart, making the warm water less dense, therefore the warm water rises and the cool water takes the place at the bottom.
3 ways you can prevent energy losses through heating in homes?
Thermal insulation
Double glazed windows
Cavaity walls, which the air gaps reduce the amount of energy transferred by conduction through the wall
