Topic 1 Flashcards
What was the Geocentric theory?
The Geocentric theory states that the Earth was in the centre of the solar system and the planets and sun orbited the Earth
What was the Heliocentric theory?
The Heliocentric theory states that the sun is in the centre of the solar system and the planets and Earth orbit the sun.
Who was Galileo?
Galileo was the first astronomer to make observations using telescopes. In 1610 he reported that he had observed four moons orbiting Jupiter.
What is Reflection?
Reflection is when light bounces off a boundary between two different materials.
What is Refraction?
Refraction is when passes from one material to another. When light passes through a boundary between two materials at angles the direction changes
What does a Converging lens do?
Converging lens make rays of lights come together. The point at which the parallel rays come together is called the focal point.
Name the different parts of a wave?
Frequency - The number of waves passing a point each second measured in Hertz(Hz)
Speed - Measured in meters per second (M/S)
Wavelength - the distance between each wave
Amplitude - How high the wave is
How did William Herschel discover infra-red?
He used a prism to spilt up white light into its components. He used a thermometer to measure the different temperature of the colours. He then put it past the red and found that the temperature was even higher than the red.
Name the different parts of the Electromagnetic Spectrum?
Radio Waves Microwaves Infra-red Visible Light UV X-Rays Gamma Rays
What are the effects of ionisation?
Energy transferred by ionising radiation removes electrons from atoms to form ions. Ions are reactive and can cause mutation to the DNA in cells. Damaged cells can lead to cancer
