Topic 1 Flashcards
Porous pot experiment - When porous pot is put on
Hydrogen diffuses into the porous pot faster than the air diffuses out. There is then a build up of pressure in the pot, and the ink moves away from the pot.
Definition of diffusion
The net movement of particles from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration, until a uniform concentration is achieved. It is brought about by the random movement of particles and it takes place independently of gravity.
When porous pot is removed
Ink goes back down the tube as the hydrogen particles are moving out quicker than the air moving in. ( reverse of porous pot being on)
What happens if the gas going into the porous pot is heavier than air ?
The gas going into to the porous pot will be slower than the air coming out, making the ink move toward the porous pot
Homogeneous
A uniform mixture
Heterogeneous
A non-uniform mixture
Solution
Homogeneous mixture of a solid/ gas in liquid
Suspension
Heterogeneous mixture of a solid in liquid
Emulsion
Heterogeneous mixture of two or more liquids

Element
A simple substance that cannot be broken down into a similar form by chemical uses ; electricity, heat. It contains only one type of atom
Compound
A substance made from two or more elements chemically combined
Mixture
Two or more elements or compounds not chemically joined together but mixed
