Topic 1 Flashcards
Define Evidence-based practice
A problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making that incorporates a search for the best and latest evidence, clinical expertise and assessment, and patient preference and values, within the context of nursing
Who made this definition of EBP?
International council of nurses, 2012
Why must nurses apply EBP to their profession?
It is a requirement by the NMC - must always practice in line with the best available evidence
What are the 3 parts to the triad of EBP?
- Individual Clinical Expertise
- Best external voice
- Patient value and expectations
What is meant by ‘Individual Clinical Expertise’?
It is the proficiency and judgement that clinicians acquire through clinical experience and practice
Why should nurses incorporate patient values and perspectives?
It aligns to person-centred approach - patients are active participants in their care, recognising and valuing their expertise, and facilitating shared decision making (Siminoff, 2013)
Where is best evidence usually found?
Usually found in clinically relevant research in which a sound methodology has been used (Sackett et all., 1996)
What are the 7 steps to EBP?
0: Cultivate a spirit of inquiry
1: Ask clinical qus for appropriate format
2: Search for best evidence
3: critically appraise evi
4: integrate evi with clinical expertise and patient prefs and values
5: evaluate outcomes of practise decisions/ changes based on evi
6: disseminate EBP results
What 2 formats should you use when asking clinical qus?
PICO or PEO
What does PICO stand for?
- Population
- Intervention
- Comparison
-Outcome
What does PEO stand for?
- Population
- Exposure
- Outcome
What is qualitative data?
Narrative date - comes from interviews, focus groups, observations etc
What is Quantitative data?
Numerical data - from questionnaires, tests, physical measurements etc
What are the challenges of EBP?
- Time/ workload
- Awareness of specific EBP skills
- Research literacy e.g. understands papers
- difficulty finding evidence
- Culture -> “ this is how we have always done it
