TOPIC 1 Flashcards
Define Data
Data is raw facts and figures which has not been processed and has no meaning
Define information
Information is data that has been processed and therefore has meaning and context
Define pixel
A pixel is the smallest unit of digital image that can be displayed and edited on a computer screen
State 3 characteristics of a pixel
> A pixel is the smallest area that can be edited on a graphic > Each pixel has its own colour > When combined together pixels form an image
Define resolution
Resolution is the measure of the quality of an image per number of pixels.
A high resolution image contains a high number of pixels. What can this lead to?
> Longer loading times
Longer file transfer times between communication links
Define a bitmapped image
Bitmap image graphics are made up of pixels which can provide high quality photographs
State 3 examples of bitmaps image
> JPEG
TIFF
GIFF
Define a thumbnail
A thumbnail image is a smaller version of an image. You click on the thumbnail to display the full version image
State 2 advantages of a thumbnail
> Reduces the loading time for pages
Shows a preview of the image
Define vector based images
Vector i ages are made up of mathematical equations which are not affected by scaling
State 3 features of vector based images
> The image can be resized without loss of quality
The image quality does not depend on resolution
Suitable for diagrams and symbols
State 3 advantages of vector based images
> WMF
EPS
SWF
State 2 differences between bitmap and vector based images
> Can be resized without loss of quality of vector based images whereas bitmapped images will be pixelated when resized
There is no need to store individual pixel values in vector based images
What is streaming?
Streaming a video involves initiating the playing of the video shortly after the first few seconds of the video file have been downloaded, allowing the video to be watched in real time
State three advantages of streaming
> The video is unlikely to be replicated
The user does not have to wait for the entire file to download
The users computer does not need to be capable of storing the entire file
Define buffering
A part of memory used to store a downloaded video before it is watched
What is buffering
During streaming, a video is both downloading in the backround and playing in the foreground.
What is representing sound?
Conversion to digital is necessary. computers do not understand analogue signals this needing to convert the signals to digital
What is the difference between analogue and digital signals?
Analogue signals are continuous signal whereas digital signals are binary digits
Define anal;ogue signals
An analogue signal is a continuous signal varying frequency that represents a physical such as sound.
Define digital signals
A digital signal is a binary signal with 1s and 0s as values
